Livorno is a modern city with ancient seafaring traditions. The House of Medici had it built to a design by Bernardo Buontalenti in order to provide them with access to the sea.
Consequently, Livorno went from being a fishing village in a natural cove to an important port city with fortresses and military outposts. Ferdinando I de’ Medici encouraged its development by welcoming people fleeing political and religious persecution, thus giving the city a lively, industrious multi-ethnic community.
In the surrounding hills are medieval villages and ancient fortified towns. These little historical gems have been preserved with great care and passion over the years, meaning that we can still enjoy them today.
