Legend has it that Pisa was founded by mythical Trojans who fled from the ancient Greek city of Pisa. Today, the city is home to three of the top higher education establishments in Italy and Europe (the University of Pisa, SNS and the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies) as well as the Italian National Research Council and numerous research institutes.

The top monuments in the city include the famous Piazza dei Miracoli, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to the cathedral, which is made of white and coloured marble and contains the bronze San Ranieri door and a pulpit by Giovanni Pisano.
