Pistoia boasts a wealth of exquisite Romanesque and Renaissance monuments and it is home to one of the most picturesque squares in Italy: Piazza del Duomo, the geometric centre of the city and the hub of both its civil and its ecclesiastical power.

The many landmarks include the Cathedral of San Zeno. It contains the silver altar of Saint James, which is considered a masterpiece of religious silversmithing and features contributions from Brunelleschi. Among the others are the Gothic Palazzo Pretorio, which serves as the courthouse, and the Town Hall, which has double and triple lancet windows in its beautiful façade. A final unmissable sight is the early medieval Catilina Tower, which is 30 metres tall.
